Flaxseed a Super Seed – Health a Bliss

Jam packed with omega-3 and charged with fiber these tiny little seeds can really boost up your health.

This is why I dont forget to include this super seed in my diet everyday. I use it in powder form as ground form is easier for your body to digest. Whole flaxseed may pass through your intestine undigested, which means you won’t get all the benefits.

One tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains:

2 grams of polyunsaturated fatty acids (includes the omega 3s).

2 grams of dietary fiber.

Flaxseed is loaded with:

  • Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 fats. It contain 50 to 60 percent omega-3 fatty acids which are considered to be “good fats” that are beneficial for the heart. These essential acids are only obtainable by eating the right foods as human body does not produce them.
  • It is rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber.
  • It is a rich source of vitamin B.
  • It is a great source of lignans, one of the major classes of phytoestrogens. Lignans are estrogen-like chemical compounds with antioxidant qualities.

Health benefits of Flaxseed:

1.) Fights Cancer: consuming flaxseed regularly may help protect against prostate, colon, and breast cancers. The lignans in flaxseed have antiangiogenic properties – they stop tumors from forming new blood vessels.

2.) Lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels: It is loaded with soluble fiber which dissolves with water and creates a gel-like substance that helps to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels.

3.) Improves digestion: Insoluble fiber in flaxseed helps absorbs water, which adds bulk to your digestive tract and aids digestion which is also essential for weight loss.

4.) Protect against radiation: Flaxseed may protect skin tissue from being damaged by radiation due to its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

5.) Prevent hot flashes: A study suggests that a dietary intake of flaxseed can decrease the risk of hot flashes among postmenopausal women. Not only does flaxseed seem to alleviate hot flashes, but it appears to have overall health and psychological benefits as well.

Tips for including flaxseed in your diet:

  • Mix them in your breakfast cereals.
  • Mix it in your ssandwich spread.
  • Blend it in your juice or smoothies.
  • Sprinkle it on your salad or in soup.
  • Add ground flaxseed in your curd or buttermilk.
  • Add them in your home made muffins, cookies, bread or chapatis.
  • Sprinkle it on your cooked vegetables for nuttier flavour.

Buying and storing them:

With its growing popularity flaxseed is easily available at grocery stores in powder form or whole.

However I prefer grounding them on my own in my mixer and store them in an airtight container in a cool and dark place. It can also be refrigerated for longer shelf life.

Cautions:

  • Pregnant women should avoid consuming flaxseed because of its estrogen-like properties which may affect pregnancy outcome.
  • People suffering from a bowel obstruction should avoid flaxseed too because of its high level of fiber.
  • Flaxseed should be taken with plenty of water or other fluids.
  • Flaxseed shouldn’t be taken at the same time as oral medications or other dietary supplements.
  • Always consult your doctor before trying any dietary supplements.
